How Metagross plays
Metagross surveys the area and analyzes all nearby opposing Pokémon before completing its calculations. If the data indicates that there are two or less opposing Pokémon in the area, Metagross will grant itself a shield before leaping at the target with the lowest remaining HP. If there are three or more opposing Pokémon in the area, Metagross will also create a wall around itself to trap its enemies.
